RMT Massage Therapy in Burnaby & Vancouver
Therapeutic massage for pain relief, muscle recovery, and stress reduction. Our registered massage therapists accept ICBC, MSP, and extended health plans.
Massage Therapy at Phoenix Rehab
Registered Massage Therapy (RMT) is the therapeutic use of hands-on techniques to treat the muscles, joints, and soft tissues of the body. Unlike relaxation massage, RMT is provided by highly trained and regulated health professionals who combine clinical knowledge with therapeutic touch.
At Phoenix Rehab, our RMTs assess your condition and develop treatment plans matched to your specific needs that may include deep tissue massage, trigger point therapy, and stretching techniques. Whether recovering from an injury, managing chronic pain, or seeking stress relief โ massage therapy supports both your physical health and overall well-being.
Our Burnaby clinic brings together RMTs, physiotherapists, chiropractors, acupuncturists, kinesiologists, and counsellors โ all under one roof. This means your massage therapy can be seamlessly coordinated with other disciplines when needed, giving you access to a truly integrated approach to recovery and wellness.

What Conditions Does Massage Therapy Treat?
Our RMTs support patients with a wide range of conditions โ from acute injuries to stress-related tension.
Sports Injuries
Sprains, strains, and soft tissue recovery after training or competition. Our RMTs develop sport-specific treatment plans that address the demands of your activity and help reduce your risk of re-injury through targeted recovery work.
Motor Vehicle Accidents (ICBC)
Soft tissue rehabilitation and pain management after accidents โ direct billed through ICBC. Early massage therapy intervention after a collision can significantly reduce muscle guarding, scar tissue formation, and the risk of chronic pain developing.
Work-Related Injuries (WSBC)
Repetitive strain, posture-related discomfort, and stress-related tension from occupational demands. We coordinate with WorkSafeBC to create recovery plans that address both the injury and the workplace factors contributing to it.
Chronic Pain
Persistent back, neck, shoulder, and joint pain that limits daily life. Regular massage therapy helps break the pain-tension cycle by releasing muscle tightness, improving blood flow, and reducing the nervous system's sensitivity to pain signals.
Headaches & Migraines
Targeted tension relief to reduce the frequency and severity of headaches. Many tension-type and cervicogenic headaches respond well to focused neck, shoulder, and upper back massage combined with trigger point release.
Stress & Muscle Tension
Relaxation massage for overall mental and physical wellness. Research shows that massage therapy reduces cortisol levels while increasing serotonin and dopamine โ helping manage anxiety, improve sleep quality, and support your body's natural recovery processes.
Post-Surgical Recovery
Gentle techniques to improve circulation and mobility during healing. Post-operative massage helps reduce scar tissue adhesions, decrease swelling, restore range of motion, and accelerate your return to normal activities โ all while working within your surgeon's post-operative guidelines.
What Techniques Are Used in Massage Therapy?

How Does Massage Therapy Work?
A clear, patient-centred approach to ensure safe, effective treatment every visit.
Initial Assessment & Treatment Plan
Your first visit begins with a thorough review of your health history, current symptoms, and treatment goals. Your RMT performs a hands-on assessment to identify areas of tension, restricted movement, or soft tissue dysfunction โ then develops a treatment plan specific to your needs. If imaging or referral to another practitioner is appropriate, your RMT will recommend next steps.
Your Massage Sessions
Your RMT selects and combines techniques based on your diagnosis and goals โ whether pain relief, injury rehabilitation, improved mobility, or stress management. Pressure levels are always adjusted to your comfort, and your therapist checks in throughout the session to ensure the treatment feels right. Each session builds on the previous one.
Ongoing Recovery & Wellness
For long-term results, our RMTs provide self-care strategies, targeted stretches, and lifestyle advice you can use between sessions. Many patients include regular massage as part of their ongoing wellness routine โ either for maintenance after an injury heals, or as proactive care to prevent future problems and manage everyday stress.
What Should You Expect in a Massage Session?
Session Details
Initial sessions typically last 60 minutes. Your RMT will take a full health history, assess your condition through hands-on evaluation, discuss your goals, and begin treatment โ all in the same visit.
Follow-up sessions are available in 30, 45, or 60-minute formats depending on your condition and goals. Your RMT will recommend the appropriate length based on how your body is responding to treatment.
Techniques are always adapted to your comfort and preferences. Whether you prefer gentle relaxation massage or deep tissue pressure, your RMT adjusts throughout the session and checks in regularly to ensure the treatment feels right.
Many patients report both immediate relief and cumulative benefits with regular care. While a single session can ease tension and pain, the most lasting results come from consistent treatment over time as your body heals and adapts.
All sessions are conducted in a professional, private, and comfortable treatment room. Your RMT will explain everything before and during the session, and you are always in control of what happens โ you can request changes to pressure, position, or focus area at any time.
Who Can Benefit from Registered Massage Therapy?
Massage therapy helps far more than sore muscles. People of all ages and activity levels seek RMT treatment for pain relief, injury recovery, stress management, and preventive wellness. Here are some of the groups we commonly help at our Burnaby clinic.
Office Workers & Remote Professionals
Prolonged sitting at a desk or laptop creates chronic tension patterns in the neck, shoulders, and upper back. Over time, these patterns can lead to persistent headaches, reduced mobility, and referred pain into the arms and hands. Therapeutic massage releases built-up tension, improves circulation to overworked muscles, and helps reset postural habits โ so you can work more comfortably and with less pain.
Athletes & Active Individuals
Training, competition, and recreational sports place repeated demands on muscles and connective tissue. Sports massage helps maintain flexibility, speeds recovery between workouts, and addresses micro-injuries before they become major problems. Whether you run marathons or play weekend soccer, regular RMT sessions help you perform better and recover faster.
Seniors & Aging Adults
Age-related muscle stiffness, reduced circulation, and joint pain respond well to gentle massage techniques. Treatment focuses on maintaining mobility, reducing discomfort from arthritis and other chronic conditions, and improving sleep quality. Our RMTs use appropriate pressure and positioning to ensure comfort and safety for older adults.
Motor Vehicle Accident Survivors
Whiplash, soft tissue injuries, and muscle guarding after car accidents often worsen without proper treatment. Massage therapy is a covered benefit under ICBC accident claims, and early intervention can significantly improve recovery outcomes and reduce the risk of chronic pain.
Pregnant Women
Pregnancy places unique demands on the body โ lower back pain, hip discomfort, swollen legs, and disrupted sleep are common. Prenatal massage uses safe, specially adapted techniques and positioning to relieve pregnancy-related discomfort, reduce swelling, and support your body through each trimester. Our RMTs are trained in prenatal massage protocols.
People Managing Stress & Anxiety
Chronic stress manifests physically as muscle tension, headaches, poor sleep, and fatigue. Massage therapy activates the parasympathetic nervous system โ lowering cortisol, slowing heart rate, and promoting deep relaxation. Many patients use regular massage sessions as part of their mental health and wellness routine alongside counselling or other supports.
How Long Does Massage Therapy Take to Work?
The length and frequency of massage therapy depends on your specific condition, how long it has been present, its severity, and your personal treatment goals. Here is a general guide to what you can expect.
Sessions 1โ3: Assessment & Acute Relief
Your RMT performs a thorough assessment, identifies the primary areas of concern, and begins hands-on treatment. Most patients notice some improvement in pain, tension, and mobility within the first 1โ3 sessions. For acute conditions like fresh injuries or severe muscle spasms, sessions are typically weekly.
Weeks 3โ8: Progressive Recovery
Once initial symptoms improve, treatment shifts to addressing deeper tissue restrictions, movement patterns, and contributing factors. Your RMT may incorporate stretching protocols, self-care homework, and adjusted techniques as your body responds. Sessions are typically weekly to bi-weekly during this phase.
Monthly+: Maintenance & Wellness
After your primary concerns are resolved, many patients transition to periodic maintenance sessions (monthly or as needed) to manage everyday stress, prevent recurring tension patterns, and maintain the gains achieved during active treatment.
Simple tension or acute muscle strain may resolve in 2โ4 sessions. Chronic pain conditions, repetitive strain injuries, or post-accident recovery typically require 6โ12 weeks of consistent treatment before transitioning to maintenance. Your RMT will provide a specific treatment plan and expected timeline during your first visit. We track your progress at every appointment and adjust the plan accordingly โ your recovery pace drives the schedule, not a fixed number of visits.
Massage Therapy FAQs
What Is the Difference Between an RMT and a Spa Massage?
A Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) is a regulated health professional who has completed a rigorous college-level program in anatomy, physiology, pathology, and clinical massage techniques โ typically 3,000+ hours of education. RMTs perform clinical assessments, develop treatment plans, and treat specific conditions. Spa massage focuses on relaxation and general well-being. At Phoenix Rehab, all massage therapy is provided by fully licensed RMTs regulated by the College of Massage Therapists of British Columbia, which means your sessions can be direct billed to insurance.
How Often Should You Get a Massage?
It depends on your condition and goals. For acute injuries or chronic pain, weekly sessions are common in the initial phase. As symptoms improve, frequency typically reduces to bi-weekly, then monthly. For general wellness and stress management, many patients find monthly sessions sufficient to maintain their results. Your RMT will recommend a schedule matched to your specific needs and progress.
Is Massage Therapy Covered by Insurance in BC?
Yes. Registered Massage Therapy is covered by most extended health insurance plans in British Columbia. ICBC covers massage therapy for motor vehicle accident injuries, and WorkSafeBC covers it for approved workplace injury claims. Some MSP supplementary benefits may also apply. At Phoenix Rehab, we offer direct billing to most major insurance providers โ meaning you typically pay nothing upfront for covered sessions. Our admin team can verify your coverage before your first appointment.
Do I Need a Referral to See an RMT in BC?
No. In British Columbia, you can see a Registered Massage Therapist directly without a doctor's referral โ this is called direct access. Simply book an appointment and begin treatment right away. However, if you are claiming through ICBC, WorkSafeBC, or certain extended health plans, a physician's referral may be required to activate your coverage. Our front desk team can help you determine what is needed for your specific insurance situation.
Should Massage Therapy Be Painful?
No. While some therapeutic techniques (like deep tissue or trigger point therapy) may cause temporary discomfort, massage should never be painful. Your RMT will check in throughout the session and adjust pressure based on your feedback. A good rule of thumb: you should be able to breathe normally and relax during treatment. If anything feels too intense, tell your therapist โ there are always alternative techniques that can achieve similar results with less discomfort.
What Should I Wear to a Massage Therapy Appointment?
Wear whatever is comfortable for you. During the session, you will be properly draped with sheets at all times โ only the area being treated is exposed. Most patients undress to their comfort level. Your RMT will step out of the room while you get settled on the treatment table. If you prefer to remain partially clothed, your therapist can adapt techniques accordingly. Your comfort and privacy are always the priority.
Is Massage Therapy Covered by Insurance?
Massage therapy at Phoenix Rehab is provided by Registered Massage Therapists, covered by most insurance providers. We handle the paperwork.
Most patients pay little to nothing out of pocket.
We direct bill ICBC, WorkSafeBC, MSP, and most extended health plans โ so you can focus on getting better, not paperwork.
